Hone your skills as a hiker by learning the basics of map reading, leave no trace ethics, how to pack a first aid kit, what to carry in your backpack, the importance of a positive attitude when hiking, and much more. Plentiful water, enough food, good hiking shoes, and a love for hiking adventures are a must!

Are you ready to take your adventuring to new heights and experience the wilderness in a whole new way? You will learn the skills of orienteering, how to use a map and compass, and experience how teamwork is crucial for a successful expedition. You will take special trips to the wild places around Aspen while learning about the local plants and wildlife. Then, you’ll go on an overnight camping experience planned by you! That’s right, a big part of this ACES Adventure Week is learning how to plan your own outdoor adventures. 

Schedule for the week:
Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Hallam Lake
Thursday: Meet at the trailhead at 10 a.m. ready for the overnight
Friday: Pickup at trailhead at 12 p.m.

 All creatures have special skills. Humans are masters in the art of storytelling. Since the beginning of our time on earth, we have told stories, especially about the natural world. Every culture has its tales that help people understand their environment, and this week we will investigate them. How does storytelling help human beings survive and adapt? How does one tell a compelling story? Join us as we explore Hallam Lake and the surrounding area and as we craft some of our very own myths and folktales to pass on to our friends, families, and future generations!

This week you will observe the natural world around Hallam Lake and—it's plants, animals, ponds, and rivers—to decode the patterns and create your own in paintings, collages, prints, and sculpture! Campers will split time between Hallam Lake and the Red Brick Studios.

For students entering the grades 3 or 4 in the fall, our week-long day camps are based on exploration, teamwork, having fun, and asking questions about the natural world. ACES' environmental educators will be your guides for hands-on learning experiences at our sites and beyond!
