Grades 3-4 Camp at Rock Bottom Ranch

Come to Rock Bottom Ranch this summer to experience a week in the life of a farmer. Care for the ranch animals, work in the garden, take charge of egg collecting and learn to harvest ranch products to turn them into a delicious treat. Once your chores are done, head out into the preserve to explore the far reaches of the wetlands.

How do bees build hives? How are trees used to create homes for forest animals and plants? How do animals and plants work together to build protective, nurturing environments? This week, we will explore our Hallam Lake environments to inspire our own natural structures and spaces.

Do you ever wonder how things work or how they are made? Do you like to solve problems or do challenges? Throughout this week of hands-on investigations we will ask and answer questions about real life on the ranch. From how simple machines make life on the ranch possible to how food gives us energy, we will discover the mysteries behind Rock Bottom Ranch.

Can you light a one-match fire? What do elk do when they're caught in a lightning storm? What leaf can soothe a nettle sting? Join us to find out! ACES’ environmental educators are experts in helping you develop basic mountain knowledge ranging from map-and-compass navigation to outdoor risk management and decision making. By the final day, you will know how to use natural materials to protect yourself from the elements, pack the perfect daypack, and identify local edible plants. Home base is Rock Bottom Ranch, but you’ll test your skills on numerous hikes and field trips during this week of adventuring!

This week you will observe the natural world around Rock Bottom Ranch—its plants, animals, ponds, and rivers—to decode the patterns . We will explore patterns in water, soil, vegetables, water, forests, flowers, and MORE! Let your creativity run wild!

Put on your apron and boots and come to the ranch ready to explore the delicious world of food and the inspiring systems of regenerative agriculture. Spend the week watering, harvesting, washing, chopping, mixing, and best of all—tasting food! Participants will become comfortable on the farm and in the kitchen. See what creations you come up with!
